The Accountant Who Saw Too Much
Matthew Dodds didn't start his career as a tech disruptor. He started as a Chartered Accountant at PKF, one of Australia’s most respected mid-tier firms. But while his peers were focused on tax returns and balance sheets, Matthew was noticing a recurring, systemic failure in the businesses he served. He saw companies with terabytes of data that were, for all intents and purposes, flying blind.
"I saw clients hiding behind anecdotal 'success' while the actual numbers were screaming for help," Matthew recalls. "I saw businesses with massive turnover whose owners couldn't tell me their cash position without a three-day delay. That’s when I realised that traditional accounting is reactive, it tells you what happened last year. Business Intelligence (BI) is proactive; it tells you what is happening right now and what will happen tomorrow."
The Birth of Vision BI
Vision BI was born from a specific requirement for clients needing a clear understanding of their . Matthew identified that the tools accountants were using - Power Query and Power BI—were being underutilised. Most firms were using them for basic automation, but Matthew saw a future where they could be productised into "practice reporting" solutions for other professional services firms.
"Vision BI needed to think like a technology firm, not a compliance firm; we almost needed to be the 'Anti-IT' guys, said Matthew Dodds.
When a client calls an IT firm for a dashboard, they get a bunch of pretty charts that don't actually tie to a general ledger. When they call us, they get a solution designed by people who actually have a set of skills to deliver it, while having an in-depth understanding of debits, credits, and the nuances of Australian tax law."
Solving the "Human Resource" Crisis
A core theme of Matthew’s vision is the liberation of the finance team. In 2026, many Australian CFOs are still trapped in the "Manual Cycle, "spending >20 hours a week manually collating reports. Matthew views this as a profound waste of human capital.
"If you're paying a CFO $250k a year, you aren't paying them to be a data entry clerk," Matthew says. "You're paying them for their strategic mind. Vision BI automates the 'muck work' of data cleaning so that the human beings in the business can get back to doing what they do best: providing advice and driving growth."
The 2026 Roadmap: Scaling Beyond Time
As a founder, Matthew is currently navigating the transition from a service-based business to a productised one. By creating polished, "Native BI" templates for professional practices and niche software vendors, he is building a model that scales beyond his own 24 hours.
"I want to change the behaviour of the business owner," Matthew concludes. "I want them to move from asking 'What happened?' to 'What do we do next?' That is the true power of Vision BI."
